Opposite Worlds

#93 Rational and irrational worlds formed the basis for Marcel Wanders’ design for the LG Hausys installation, a fantasy space full of surprises. #salone2015

This project centres on the contrast between the macrocosm, with an ornamental representation of the vastness of the Universe at several levels, and the microcosm, with its orderly systems and schemes found at microscopic level.

This contrast generated the space, seen as a point of encounter between the rational and the irrational, with at the centre a large, slowly rotating medallion that conveys the versatility of the new-generation Hi-Macs® acrylic stone.

“We have created a fantasy space full of surprises,” explains Marcel Wanders, “where visitors can linger, soak up the atmosphere and explore all the many possibilities offered by the LG Hausys range of materials. We have fully developed their potential from floor to walls, coverings and claddings.” As well as the solid surfaces, the furnishings were covered with LG Gracia wallpaper, while the wall cladding is a laminate normally adopted for apparatus and devices. “There are no good or bad materials,” Wanders tells us. “Each one has a vocation and speaks to us of its qualities. It is up to us to listen, understand and experiment with its potential.”
