Between the United States and Canada, a cabin celebrates wood in all its forms

In Point Roberts, Scott and Scott reinterpret the North American rural house through exposed timber structures and natural materials.

Design firm: Scott and Scott
Project name: Apa Road House
Location: Point Roberts, Washington
Area: 200 sqm

Point Roberts is a U.S. exclave located in Washington State that cannot be reached by land without passing through Canada. Scott and Scott have designed a retreat-like home here, set within a clearing and intended for short stays in an area that has largely become a holiday destination. The project centres on the extensive and thoughtful use of wood. Exposed structural beams form a dense truss system that is visible across both levels. The ground floor is dedicated to the living area, with a mezzanine level above. The exterior surfaces are clad in Alaska yellow cedar, which is designed to weather and evolve over time. Inside, fir and oak are used for furnishings and functions — from the kitchen to the stair core and custom pieces crafted using traditional techniques. Wood interacts with stone, metal, white plaster and terracotta flooring, yet it remains the dominant element, unifying the spaces and creating a strong sense of material continuity.
