Vidler metteva in rilievo il frammento di collage che raffigura la Terra che si trova in alto in cima alla composizione, osservando che era ritagliato da un numero di Life del 1955. Questa veduta del mondo era entrata a far parte dell'immaginario collettivo attraverso la rivista più popolare del pianeta e quindi portava in sé la tensione tra il consumismo rampante e la guerra fredda. Con il titolo 100 Mile Portrait of Earth ("Ritratto della Terra da 100 miglia") il montaggio fotografico era composto da immagini scattate con una macchina da ripresa aerea collocata su un missile, e all'epoca fu il documento a colori del pianeta ripreso dalla quota più alta. Questa popolarità e l'implicita democratizzazione di una prospettiva un tempo privilegiata si mescola al timore della guerra fredda nella mostra Ends of the Earth: Land Art to 1974, aperta fino al 3 settembre 2012 al Geffen Contemporary del MOCA di Los Angeles. Quest'ampia retrospettiva storica riunisce una generazione di artisti che lavoravano sotto la minaccia dell'annichilazione nucleare e della corsa allo spazio, e che dimostrava l'impulso centripeto a spingersi fuori dalle gallerie nel territorio ignoto del paesaggio.
