The sculptural interiors of an office in Beijing

Architect Xiaoxi Xiong conceives an open, monochromatic workspace, where the cladding matte finish outlines a suspended and inclusive environment, made of sculptural and enveloping volumes.

A space on two levels on the top floor, flooded with natural light, where environments can be reconfigured without rigid restrictions: a small luxury in contemporary Beijing, where the chronic lack of space sums up with the existence of rigid architectural regulations. Yet it is not the views of the outside that characterize the new offices of the Fnji furniture brand, which specializes in the use of natural materials, but rather a muffled, monochromatic atmosphere, where the grey of the plaster finish coverings extends seamlessly over the walls and floors.

Xiaoxi Xiong, the architect behind the project, says he was inspired by "Her", a science fiction film that imagines a love story with an operating system. To convey the same "blurred and warm sense of future" emanating from the film, Xiong uses translucent tissue paper-like curtains, round pillars, and rounded volumes to create a suspended and inclusive atmosphere.

Grey also distinguishes most of the furniture, with the exception of some striking elements, such as the black stone counter at the entrance. On the wall, some broken bricks are covered with the same grey plaster finish, animating the minimalist key of the space. On the ceiling, a calibrated warm artificial light meets the blue tone of the natural light filtered through the skylights, creating sophisticated visual effects.
