“Dancing is what we make of falling”: The role of art in times of crisis

At Officine Grandi Riparazioni in Turin, a video exhibition and a public program reposition an art space as a space of debate.

In a time of social and cultural setback, where several urban scenes tend to reject any perspective of inclusion or intersectionality, involving the other or the deviant, art institutions and art spaces are called to a re-positioning. The answer of Officine Grandi Riparazioni is that “Dancing Is What We Make Of Falling”, a statement on what art can do in times of crisis (quoting poet and researcher Fred Moten).
DIWWMOF is a series of 6 different times crossbreeding visual and video art and a proper public program, framed within a critical view on society and the city by minorities, or by groups suffering a general denial of agency.

Tracey Moffat’s subordinate characters escaping Hollywood dystopias, Jacolby Satterwhite’s CGI utopia made of voguing and familiarity, trans advocacy by Wu Tsang and zombie street crews by Loretta Fahrenholz, the obsession for vac-cleaners by Roee Rosen and the dump-dancing Carmen Miranda by Goldschmid & Chiari, Hardeep Pandhal’s critics to colonialism and Sonia Boyce’s afro-american female bodies: all these critical staments/un-statements combine with contributions expressly conceived for OGR space by more artists, curators, activists and researchers, and a local House hosting its second Ball on site.

As in a prosecution of the exploration ushered 25 years ago by Beatriz Colomina’s “Sexuality and Space”, a crucial role is given by DIWWMOF to a critique of body-space interaction. As stressed by curator Samuele Piazza, “In Satterwhite’s videos a new world comes out following its own physical rules, whereas Fahrenholz’s characters slide against glass buildings in Manhattan or wrecked streets in a post-Sandy Brooklyn, carving out their place like mobile-shot pictures. The work by Pandhal transfigures into an animation the street where the artist grew up in Birmingham. In other cases connection is simply suggested, by city waste in Goldschmied and Chiari’s work, or by refugees’ detention camps in for Roee Rosen. The exhibition space itself tries to  become a safe space within the city, giving a voice to the multiple realties existing on the territory, giving them a chance to interact and reach a wider audience through their collaborations.”
