Mexico. A white and precise architecture becomes a market and frames a rural building

The project by HW-Studio in Morelia, Mexico, turns a winery into a gastronomic market, enhancing the different layers of place’s history.

Mexico

In the town of Morelia, Mexico, HW-Studio turned an old winery into a gastronomic market. Mexican studio combined its contemporary language with the architectures of the past, exploring possible relationships and dialectics between both. That existing building was the backyard of a residence. However, over time, reforms, ownership changes and different uses of the place, some modifications took place, causing the space to lose its essence.

HW-Studio identified some compositional elements of these places: axes, axial routes, volumes, sky, trees, natural materials, and they incorporated them into a new project, trying to achieve a balance between the new and the old. The project formally and materially has a different nature: a white and defined nature that demonstrates its own presence. Its most important function is to frame, without exclusion, the different layers of architectural history left over the centuries.
