All the winners of the prestigious annual competition Sony World Photography Awards 2021, now in its 14th edition, were announced today. Winner of the title of Photographer of the Year 2021 was British documentary filmmaker Craig Easton with his Bank Top series which examines the misrepresentation of communities in northern England. “I photograph to learn, to try and understand, to document and share stories,” commented Easton at the time of the announcement. “It’s a privilege to be able to do this by challenging perceptions and stereotypes, a subject I feel is particularly important.” A jury of experts also selected the Professional competition's winners for each of its ten categories and those for the Open, Student, and Youth sections. The body of work analysed ranged from local events to global issues, from acts of resilience to moments of joy to examples of creative genius. Today also opened the virtual exhibition dedicated to the winning and finalist photographers, along with the special documentary A Year in Photos from the Sony World Photography Awards 2021.
