Creative label Laikingland's newest collaborations with Maarten Baas, Joost van Bleiswijk & Kiki van Eijk, and Tord Boontje have produced a series of striking, exclusive kinetic objects in limited editions. Baas has designed Just About Now, a sand timer that indicates the passing of time with the sounding of a gong; van Bleiswijk & van Eijk have created Light a Moment, a candle lantern reflected a thousand times through fragmented mirrors assembled in a "constructivist" shape; and Boontje designed Cacophony, a doorbell that performs a cacophony of sound and movement.
Simultaneously, artist and Laikingland co-founder Martin Smith has created Bird Song with a Found Feather, an elaborate mechanically operated sliding whistle that can be set and activated when required. Founded in 2008 with the aim of designing and manufacturing "beautifully crafted kinetic objects", assembled by hand in England and the Netherlands by a team of highly skilled craftsmen, engineers, artisans and jewellers, Laikingland has worked with other invited artists and designers such as Atelier NL, and Atelier Ted Noten.
Devoted to designing and manufacturing kinetic objects that engage, and evoke a sense of play and nostalgia, Laikingland specialises in producing highly crafted limited editions. Alongside these products, the brand also regularly carries out projects to create one-off special editions and exclusive kinetic objects and displays. Laikingland is currently developing concepts for clients requesting feature mechanical window displays, limited edition sculptures and kinetic lighting systems.
