Masako Miki’s monumental sculptures at Uber headquarters in San Francisco

Holographic Entities Reminding of the Universe is the new permanent installation by Japanese artist Masako Miki, created for the new Uber Technologies headquarters in Mission Bay, San Francisco. The work consists of nine painted bronze sculptures up to six metres high and is positioned on the Pierpoint Lane pedestrian walkway, where it welcomes employees, visitors, residents and members of the local community. The works were manufactured by Artworks Foundry in Berkeley, California, and painted using an innovative bronze finish, which synthesizes traditional patina and modern automobile paint.

Holographic Entities Reminding of the Universe is an extension of Miki’s Shapeshifter series and is the first monumental work by the Japanese artist in the United States. Its fluid forms are reminiscent of faceless ghosts and inspired by the yōkai from Japanese folklore, ever-evolving entities that celebrate new and multiple identities. Miki’s characters embody her experience as a Japanese immigrant woman and celebrate gender fluidity, multicultural identity and all forms of artistic hybridity. Tracie Kelly, Head of Real Estate - HQ Bay Area for Uber, declared that the installation is inspired by “Uber’s values of motivation, inclusion and optimism and will contribute to the overall vitality and urban fabric of the Mission Bay neighbourhood.” From 16 June to 10 September, it will also be possible to visit “New Mythologies”, a solo exhibition of Miki’s new works at Fused Space (1401 16th St, San Francisco, Calif.) as part of Yves Behar’s Fuseproject, with CULT Aimee Friberg Exhibitions.
