The art performance that broke Google Maps

The busy streets became totally cleared out in Berlin: with his “walk”, digital artist Simon Weckert revealed the fallacy of technology. This is how.

Althought technologies are constantly at our “smart living” service, hacking them – turning into dysfunctional tools - it is possible. That’s Simon Weckert’s experience: the Berlin artist, focused on digital languages, by a simple trick managed to clear the streets of the German capital from traffic.

All it took was loading 99 smartphones on a wagon and carring it around the town. The concentration of many devices in one place was read by the server as a traffic jam, suggesting to all drivers alternative routes to avoid it. Besides the damage, the joke: Weckert passed right in front of the offices of Google’s Berlin too.

A joke that is as simple as it is hilarious, but one hopes it will not be repeated by others. Meanwhile, what happened was reported to Google, expecting action and a correction of this dysfunction.
