Frescoed ceilings and modern design dialogue in a renovated apartment in Rome

The project signed by Punto Zero in the Monti district unfolds between a frescoed ceiling and the continuous surface of a parquet floor, in a landscape of white walls, silent decorations and design icons.

In Rome, Punto Zero Architetti has renovated a historical flat in the Rione Monti district, enhancing its peculiarities and exalting, through a minimal gesture and a few precious materials, its character of a radiant and intimate “nest”.

The heart of the home is the vast living room dominated by the evocative frescoed ceiling that the studio has carefully restored and brought back to light, making it the star of the room.
Around the living room, the domestic spaces revolve: kitchen and bathroom on one side; bedroom and study, interconnected by a walk-in wardrobe, and private bathroom on the other.

As the architects explain: “When we spoke with the client, the theme of the ‘nest’ often emerged: the desire for a clear, bright, simple place. On the historical substratum, we thus chose to work in a very minimalist, almost imperceptible way, and draw a new story for the client and her shelter”.

The result is a play of contrasts between horizontal and vertical surfaces aimed at exposing the peculiarities of the historical environment and the ex-novo intervention. The immaculate white of the walls – on which the profiles of the white flush doors intersected by subtle geometric mouldings fade – creates a neutral background that brings out the materiality of the frescoed ceiling and the French herringbone oak parquet floor unifying the rooms.

Iconic design pieces (including the Arco lamp by Pier Giacomo and Achille Castiglioni and the the Pipistrello, the “bat” lamp by Gae Aulenti), soft, light grey lacquered furniture in the kitchen and bathrooms, and small, precious marble inserts enliven the essential rooms with details and warmth.
