This stilt house in Chile clearly reveals how it was built

Ignacio Rojas Hirigoyen Arquitectos has transformed prefabrication into an open system, combining a steel structure, building envelope and removable components to create flexible, durable and adaptable architecture.

Architectural firm: Ignacio Rojas Hirigoyen Arquitectos
Project name: BSP II (Industrialized Building System Prototype II)
Location: Matanzas, Chile
Dimensions: 5,000 square meters (lot), 120 square meters (built area)

IBSP II (Industrialised Building System Prototype II) by Ignacio Rojas Hirigoyen Arquitectos is a housing model that explores the potential of industrialised construction without succumbing to the constraints of a standardised and anonymous system, whilst maintaining a strong architectural identity. The testing ground is a site on the Chilean coast, characterised by accidented topography, complex logistical conditions and an intense oceanic climate. A central element of the project is the clarity of the building system, a set of independent yet coordinated technical components, dry-assembled so to make the building’s functioning and the hierarchical relationships between its parts evident: from the exposed metal structure, arranged in a diagonal grid, ensuring stability and rigidity in a highly seismic area, to the layered timber shell designed as a climate-control system, capable of regulating ventilation, solar gain and humidity while giving the home a warm and cosy atmosphere. The possibility to dismantle and selectively replace individual elements extends the building’s life cycle, reflecting a vision of industrialisation as a dynamic and sustainable process.
