Quebec. A V-shaped brick house

The Montreal-based practice Atelier Barda completed Maison Gauthier, a private residence near the town of Mont-Tremblant, in Quebec. The design of the building takes advantage of the hilly topography of the site, lying between the main road and the owner’s horse farm, on its west side. The berm and the forest are the visual filters hiding the building to the visitor’s eye and gradually revealing the house when approaching it, a solid volume made of bricks, limestone and oiled oak.

The access of the house is an archetypal arch opened on a brick facade. The interiors are arranged in a V-shaped plan, the main corridor divides the area of the garage and the ceramic studio from the bedroom and living area. These space are organised according to the intention to preserve the intimacy in the case of the bedrooms, while ensuring the view on the horses’ riding arena in the case of the living room.
