Awarded every two years by the European Union Intellectual Property Office – an EU agency – the DesignEuropa awards celebrate the very best in European design, designers and companies who have introduced onto the market their designs or models with the community registered protection of their design or model (RCD). This is a right to intellectual property administered by EUIPO and valid in all 28 member states of the EU, chosen by thousands of companies and individuals to protect their rights all over Europe in order to carry out their the economic and design activity. The presentation of the candidates and nominations for the DesignEuropa awards opened in November and will be concluded on 15 May 2018.

There are three categories in the DesignEuropa award. The first is for industry and is for RCDs owned by companies which have more than 50 employees and over €10 million in turnover/€10 million balance sheet total. A second award is given to small and emerging companies and for RCDs owned by companies with under 50 employees and €10 million in turnover, or founded after 1 January 2013, regardless of size. The third award is given for lifetime achievement and is reserved for individual designers who have been able to conceive and realise over the course of their professional career a significant body of work of aesthetic value which has also had an impact on the market. The candidates in this category have to currently use or have use the RCD system during their careers. All information regarding the application process can be found on the website.
