Utah. Al museo SUMA gli interni e gli esterni si confondono

Brooks + Scarpa Architects ha disegnato una copertura curvilinea con aggetti che creano spazi aperti-coperti per la socialità.

Progettato dallo studio americano Brooks + Scarpa Il Southern Utah Museum of Art (SUMA) fa parte del Beverley Taylor Sorenson Center for the Arts, un campus che comprende un centro di arte performativa, un teatro, spazi per l’educazione e la Southern Utah University. Il museo include funzioni particolari quali un centro di apprendimento esperienziale, che raccoglie, conserva ed espone i lavori dello Utah del sud e del Colorado. La principale caratteristica architettonica di questo edificio è la copertura curvilinea, che copre anche 560 mq di spazio aperto adiacente agli edifici.

Questi spazi porticati rendono meno netto il confine tra interno ed esterno e svolgono un’importante funzione sociale: favoriscono l’incontro spontaneo e lo scambio di idee. A ovest del museo, uno sbalzo di 36 m genera uno spazio d’ingresso e allo stesso tempo protegge la facciata interamente vetrata dalla luce diretta. Questo movimento senza vincoli dall’interno all’esterno crea un’atmosfera rilassante e spazi ombreggiati e freschi. Consente di usufruire al meglio delle opere d’arte e di godere la vista spettacolare delle montagne circostanti. Il complesso dispone anche di giardini di sculture, parchi e spazi esterni per uso pubblico e spettacoli dal vivo.
