Herb Lubalin: American Graphic Designer 1918-1981. Or more simply “Herb Lubalin” is the title of a book for those hungry for graphics... Released in 2012 in a limited edition by Unit Editions, it went off the rails and was almost immediately sold out, giving rise to the usual sale on Amazon and Ebay of copies at absurd prices. The book collects the super-prolific work of one of the greatest protagonists of graphic design on the centenary of his birth, still for a few days. Here the Kickstarter campaign to republish it.

After two years of workshops with children from all over the world and having collected, listened to and realized their ideas, Dominic Wilcox collects his “method’ in a small illustrated guide where everything seems not only possible, but also easy. To solve small and big problems, improve a prduct thinking about who will use it, have brilliant ideas or face new discoveries: nothing is impossible for the British designer and his ‘little’ inventors. The important thing, he explains, is to have self-confidence.

Design: Vignelli by Beatriz Cifuentes, edited by Electa in 2018. The book pays tribute to Vignelli’s multidisciplinary approach, from integrated corporate identity projects for prestigious brands to the iconic map created for the New York subway.

Book: Amitav Ghosh, The Great Derangement: Climate Change and the Unthinkable, 2017. The book by Indian writer Amitav Ghosh is a little gem about how we think about cities, geography and climate and what are the right “words to talk about it”. Product: I don’t want any object this year. So no suggestions. I can easily say that I love design and many of its authors: it’s just a modest attempt to become a little wise.

Two radically different smart writing solutions. For paper lovers, Moleskine proposes its new smart pen, the Ellipse, and its dedicated notebooks, that “sync” to the smartphone, tablet and Windows 10 apps, so drawings and notes will have a digital backup. reMarkable, instead, is an electronic paper device with a 10” display that can be used to read, annotate documents, draw and hardwrite notes – which can be easily converted to typed text. The monochrome e-ink screen resembles that of a Kindle, and offers a paper feeling on a tablet.
