Ikea U.S. has partnered with WestEast Design Group to design and build a model tiny house for homeless seniors in the San Antonio, Texas community. The Swedish giant's challenge stems from a desire to engage in social causes on a deeper and more consistent level than occasional donations.
The first housing units, each 34 square metres, have been installed in a neighbourhood that is still under construction. The project involves the construction of around 200 small houses and has already welcomed 70 residents, with another 60 expected to join them soon. In addition to housing, the project includes the provision of healthcare, counselling and community spaces, with the aim of creating an inclusive, safe and welcoming environment for all residents.
The actual design phase began only after careful research and, above all, listening to the future tenants. A prototype of the house was set up in one of the Ikea stores, giving residents the opportunity to visit and provide further feedback.
Our vision of improving people’s everyday lives goes beyond home furnishings.

The environment is designed to provide a sense of security and maximum privacy. Although the initial design included large windows to allow in natural light, residents requested more privacy. So the final design includes narrower and taller windows, accompanied by multiple layers of curtains that allow them to adjust their visibility and control their privacy - a crucial aspect for those who have been through traumatic experiences. The rooms have been designed to be flexible: the furniture is lightweight and easy to move, allowing the residents to adapt the environment to their needs.
