Chiharu Shiota’s massive white web in the chapel of Yorkshire Sculpture Park

Representing a shift in Japanese artist’s production, the “Beyond Time” installation reminisces of the life that unfolded in historical building.

Chiharu Shiota, Beyond Time, 2018

Installation and performance artist Chiharu Shiota set a massive site-specific installation of woollen thread in the Chapel at Yorkshire Sculpture Park, United Kingdom. Born 1972 in Osaka, the artist is known for his large-scale works using red or black wires and threads, such as The Key in the Hand (Japanese Pavilion, 56th International Art Exhibition, La Biennale di Venezia, 2015) and Uncertain Journey (Blain-Southern, Berlin, 2016).

Beyond Time allo Yorkshire Sculpture Park confirms what the Where are we going? installation (Le Bon Marché, Paris, 2017) marked, namely a departure from the familiar red and black thread for which she has become known. Shiota’s sweeping web of white thread emerges from a steel structure reproducing the form of a piano. These references to the Chapel’s history and years of human presence, dating back to 1744, making poignant allusion to the life that once inhabited the building, to the songs and the sounds of the bells that resonated within its walls. The installation in the Chapel interlaces the physical and conceptual to create a new visual plane – as if painting in mid-air. An artist-designed limited edition print accompanies the exhibition.
