Japanese artist Chiharu Shiota was invited by Le Bon Marché Rive Gauche in Paris to take over the windows and central hall: for the first time she uses white barn to welcome visitors.

With the ephemeral installation “Where are we going?” Chiharu Shiota took over the whole space of Le Bon Marché Rive Gauche in Paris, which gave her carte blanche. The Japanese artist is best known for her unique site-specific web-weaving work.

The idea is that one hundred and fifty boats from around the world, from all cultures and of all sizes, figuratively sail across the space at Le Bon Marché. As part of this large-scale piece, Shiota weaved the ten window displays and the store’s central glass roofs.

On the ground floor, she created “Memory of the Ocean”, a large spectacular mesh of white yarn called that visitors can walk through. Its hopeful title invites us to sail towards “a fresh start” while being carried away by the boats which will take us through a journey of uncertainty and wonder. It is also the first time that Shiota uses white yarn in an installation.
