According to The Financial Times, his latest creation – a transparent trenchcoat in natural python – deserved the Palm d’Or for originality in last seasons catwalk shows. But Jean Paul Gaultier is no stranger to this kind of recognition. The one time student of Cardin, he has always played, to great effect, with parodying the fashion establishment: from underwear worn over the top of clothes to skirts for the modern man and his latest effort goes even further.
In an installation commissioned by the Fondation Cartier in Paris as a homage to his creativity, Gaultier displays the most ephemeral collection of his career, made from bread and wicker baskets. The raw materials (water, flour, salt and yeast) give life to unexpected and ironic sculptures, thanks in part to help from some of the best bakers in Paris. E.S.
