How did Milan become the design capital? Why is there such a high density of furniture manufacturers in its environs? For the answers, we must take a step back in time to 1923, when the Villa Reale in Monza inaugurated the first Biennale of Decorative Arts, followed ten years later by Giovanni Muzio’s founding of the Milan Triennale in the Palazzo dell’Arte.

These are the factors behind the success of the Lombard metropolis and, indeed, the significance of the recent agreement between the Commune of Monza and the Milan Triennale, which have joined forces to put forward a 2004 programme of exhibitions, seminars and conferences. The first appointment is the opening of Milan, the Triennale and the Infinite City, exhibition curated by Aldo Bonomi and Alberto Abruzzese. E.S.
