Senza obiettivo (without lens): pinhole photography exhibition in Siena

“Senza obiettivo” (without lens) is the title of an international exhibition of pinhole photography being held in Siena until 17 November, to coincide with the eleventh edition of the international video festival “Visionaria”.

For those not in the field, pinhole photographs are made with a special piece of equipment which is a direct descendant of the camera oscura, used between the sixteenth and seventeenth century that instead of a lens had a tiny hole which allowed light to filter through. An ancient technique which has been rediscovered and refined for over thirty years in particular through the experimental work of a number of artists such as Paolo Gioli and Eric Renner who have achieved some interesting results.

The exhibition in Siena features around thirty ‘pinhole’ artists from around the world. Each presents a selection of four or five photographs, along with a self portrait and an image of the camera used. Part of the “game” is in fact in the construction of the equipment which may use all kinds of materials, from cardboard to beer cans or milk bottles to camper vans and caravans transformed into giant dark rooms.
