Within a large plot of sparsely vegetated land, Casa GJ presents itself as a jagged brick structure with pergolas that reconnect the interior to the surrounding landscape. The project adopts a modular layout, where nine structurally identical volumes are arranged along an east-west axis, staggered to generate spatial continuity. This configuration maximizes sun exposure while ensuring privacy for the inhabitants. The interconnected volumes also leave room for future developments, creating a non-hierarchical space open to reconfiguration.
Exposed brick for a modular home in Catalonia
Alventosa Morell designed the home for a couple, creating a free, editable space sensitive to the local character and climate performance of traditional materials.

At the center, one of the modules houses the living room. In section, this volume rises above the rest of the project, forming a light well that marks the heart of the home. Furthermore, the placement of windows on all sides of this outstanding space allows for optimal cross-ventilation and visually reconnects the interior with the sky. The exposed brick walls create a graphic pattern that incorporates the openings and the intersections of the Catalan vaults. On one hand, this refers to the local construction tradition; on the other, the entire building is conceived to function through its thermal mass.
The essence of Catalan architecture here lies not only in the presence of the vaulted ceilings but in the subtle combination of structural elements, climate harmony, and Mediterranean forms. It is a flexible house, yet firmly rooted in the local identity, one that shapes domesticity through spatial sequences and material sensitivity.
In this way, the project by Alventosa Morell offers a synthesis of refined yet straightforward architecture, where the choice of materials and spatial forms becomes a tool for living.
