In the heart of Milan, Studio Solum renovated a dwelling derived from the subdivision of a larger apartment, adopting a meticulous approach to the optimisation of space and focusing on the dialectic between contemporary lexicon and historical context.

At the entrance, a short corridor leads to the heart of the house: the living room, dominated by the new sage-coloured mezzanine. 

The need to reclaim space and functionality in a room of limited dimensions pushes the contemporary gesture to its minimum (both in constructive and figurative terms), implying a concept of living in the dense urban fabric that makes a virtue out of necessity and the renunciation of the superfluous as its expressive feature: the slab, only 4 cm thick, maximises the height of the space at the intrados, while the semi-circular staircase connecting the ground floor to the mezzanine floor acts as both structural support and parapet.

The ethereal steel and wood structure that seems to float in the void is supported by a HEB beam and a single pillar vehemently rotated forty-five degrees and positioned at the intersection of the floor patterns (in herringbone wood in the original part, in ex-novo resin in the kitchen), so as to create a dialectic between past and present and mark the boundary between the functional areas.  

The kitchen is located in place of the former bathroom, which in turn has been repositioned near the entrance. A palette of light tones in walls and decorated ceilings expands beyond physical limits the perception of the room,
