The continuous vase (the line), the metal discs (the point), the filter panels (the plane). Inspired by Wassily Kandinsky is the latest work by studio biro+, which completed the design of the outdoor spaces of a residence in Trani, Apulia. Point and Line to Plane is a key and renewing text for art theory and beyond. It was used by the father of modern abstractionism for his lectures at the Bauhaus in Weimar in the early 1920s, and in the following decades it has influenced various designers in the world of design, architecture, fashion, graphics... Through the composition of the chosen architectural elements, biro+ defines five functional areas – outdoor kitchen area, outdoor living area, lounge area, swimming pool area and entrance area – while maintaining the unity of the outdoor space.

The continuous metal vase (the line) creates connections between the functional areas, runs along the boundary walls and becomes a green wall with the inclusion of different types of drooping plants. The red discs (the dots) are elements that visually capture the inhabitants’ attention, and invite them to cross the various areas of the project. Due to the “C” shape of the project area, the dots are not all immediately perceptible, but must be discovered by exploring the space. The filter panels (the surfaces) are custom-designed elements that delimit the spaces or make them functional. The last layer of the project is the lighting design, which follows the new needs and rituals of the garden, enhancing the architectural choices and the theme of Point and Line to Plane. Following the Master’s lessons, the biro+ project opens up new possibilities for exploration which, as Kandinsky himself wrote, allow “the possibility of entering the work, becoming active in it and experiencing its pulsation with all the senses”.
