The Museum of Modern Art is going to open its expanded campus, designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro in collaboration with Gensler, on October 21. The expansion and renovation project provides more space, that increases the exhibition space by 30%, improving the experience of visitors and connecting the space to New York City. MoMA aims to be, in the words of the director Glenn D. Lowry, “a laboratory for the study and presentation of the art of our time, across all visual arts”. At the entrance, in the doble-height lobby, the Bauhaus staircase has been extended from the second floor to improve the connection with galleries, and the north wall, now glazed, offers a view on the Sculpture Garden from the new lounge. The main lobby has been improved to better welcome visitors and host the double-height store on the west. The ground floor connects the Museum to the city through new street level-exhibition spaces, while the general circulation has been improved by adding stairs and elevators. The collection galleries have been expanded on second, fourth and fifth floors. MoMA includes new spaces such as galleries of contemporary art, a studio for live programming and performances, and a Creativity Lab for education.
