Denmark. A new student village gives life to a traditional farmhouse

A student village built around a 17th century farm. The center of the new intervention by Danish studio Lenschow & Pihlmann is a Søgaard, a wooden farm house with a distinctive pitched roof. Around it are built seven new buildings that accommodate student apartments with single or double rooms, for a total of about 60 beds. The new volumes imitate the shape of the historical structure, but with contemporary materials and technologies. Their composition generates a series of intimate spaces and paths.

Each apartment has an open view on the surrounding landscape. The facades towards the village streets are more closed, guaranteeing the privacy of the residents. An important part of the project is the restoration of the Søgaard, characterised by the robustness of the building materials. The intervention on the existing is honest and visible, not hiding new elements and components in contrast with traditional techniques and materials. The roof was replaced and an internal thermal insulation was added, with also interventions on the wooden structure and the foundations.
