Seville. Gabriel Verd designs a staircase as a translucent iceberg

The emergency staircase has a steel structure coated with polycarbonate flakes, giving to the addition a light and translucent feel.

Gabriel Verd designed a new emergency staircase for the Santo Ángel de la Guarda’s school in Seville. The addition optimises circulation providing direct access to the classrooms and a second evacuation exit; it can be used under all weather conditions and satisfies the demands of fire regulations, such as ventilation and lighting.

The staircase is conceived as a steel prefabricated structure facilitating the assembly on site. The whole body of the staircase is enveloped in cellular polycarbonate corrugated panels that give to the building its peculiar iceberg-like appearance.
