Productora designed a cultural center that blends with its surroundings

Productora designed a Community Cultural Center for the small town of Teotitlán del Valle, next to Oaxaca, Mexico. The new spaces will host the collections and activities of the present Teotitlán Museum of History, the Municipal Library and a service area. The architectural volume takes into consideration the adverse climatic conditions with a palette of locally-produced materials such as pigmented concrete, timber, clay tiles and bricks that blend to its context. The aesthetics of the immediate surroundings is what actually determined the height, colorsand materials used.

The Mexican studio opted for 30 cm-thick neutral concrete walls, double-slab sloping roofs and controlled openings to create a passive system that helps to regulate the temperature inside the building and provides users with a comfortable space, with no need of air conditioning.

The main volume, facing the village square, houses the Museum, while the secondary building contains the library and service area. The total built floor represents only the 18% of the whole surface area available, allowing for large public spaces with a plaza and several gardens, improving the pedestrian routes and the connection to the town’s center.
