The new summer pavilion designed by Rem Koolhaas and Cecil Balmond with Arup for the Serpentine Gallery in London belongs to the tradition of inflatable architecture. The structure, an oval cap made from translucent material, seems to float above the lawns of Kensington Park and can be raised or lowered depending on the weather to cover or uncover the amphitheatre beneath.
From July to October a packed programme developed by Koolhaas himself along with the new director of the gallery, Hans Ulrich Obrist, will bring together artists, writers and thinkers. Work by German the artist Thomas Demand will be on show throughout the summer. E.S.
