A guest house in Upstate New York, combining brutalism and Nordic design

Designed by Vipp and Johnston Marklee, the guest house combines the rigour of concrete with the peaceful atmosphere of Scandinavian interiors.

Design firm: Johnston Marklee
Project name:  Vipp Pavilion
Location: Pond Eddy, Upstate New York, United States
Dimensions: 110 square meters

Another architectural "gem" has been added to the portfolio of historic Danish design company VIPP, which has recently been exploring hospitality as an extension of its domestic universe through the design of holiday homes in detoxifying settings, furnished with pieces from the brand. The fifteenth in the series is Vipp Pavilion, a guest house located a couple of hours from Manhattan in a wooded area, where the dialectic between artifice and nature is resolved through a sleek but peaceful design with a clear Scandinavian feel. The building is reflected in a pond without any intention of camouflage, declaring some brutalist suggestions in its sharp geometry and rough concrete shell. Strategically placed glass panels and zenithal skylights erode the volume, bringing views of the wood and sky into the sober and bright interiors; a palette of golden tones like autumn leaves, greens and greys like mossy bark softens the austerity of the composition and weaves a perceptive (and emotional) connection with the landscape.
