Acer's bike-desk for exercising while working recharges devices by pedaling

At CES 2023, Acer unveiled eKinekt Bike Desk, a hybrid between a bicycle and a workstation: is this a workaholic dystopia or the obvious desk evolution for the hybrid work world?

Worried that overworking is keeping you from exercising enough? At CES 2023, Acer unveiled the eKinekt Bike Desk, a new moveable desk that doubles as an exercise bike and allows you to reach your activity goals without necessarily giving up on your burnout. Obviously, it could be seen both as the dystopian product for a workaholic world and as an inevitable integration into the current hybrid work scenario.

Designers at the Taiwanese company haven’t tried too hard to make the device look special. The eKinekt, in fact, looks just like a cross between a small standing desk and an exercise bike. They went all-in on sustainability, though, using post-consumer recycled plastic (PCR) for the bike casing and the desk.

The eKinekt comes with two modes. In Working Mode, the desk tray moves closer to the chair to make typing easier. In Sports Mode, the user can push the desk away to increase leg space and pedal faster, giving “agile sprints” a completely different (and more appropriate) meaning.

On the desk, Acer installed two USB Type-A ports and one USB-C to charge multiple devices simultaneously. The user’s activity on the bike generates electricity to power the ports. According to Acer, with a one-hour session at 60rpm, users can generate about 75W of power. eKinekt BD 3 will hit the North American and European markets in June 2023, with a suggested price of $999 or €999.
