Frog by Living Divani: the simplicity that never ceases to amaze

Lightweight, essential, timeless: Frog turns 30. Designed by Piero Lissoni, it speaks to a perennial design elegance, one rooted in balance, artisanal heritage and contemporary vision, always ready to evolve.

Some icons don’t need to raise their voice to make themselves known or show how much they matter or important they are. They let others recognize them without any fuss, through the natural way they inhabit a space, in the balance they strike between form and function, past and present. This is true of Frog, the armchair Lissoni designed in 1995 for Living Divani: a piece that has turned simplicity into a language and essentiality into a vision, earning a lasting place in the collective imagination of contemporary design. Three decades after its debut, Frog continues to express the casual sophistication of a design philosophy in which detail is never just decoration, it is substance, and where comfort becomes a cultural expression. Over time, Frog has become far more than a chair: it is a symbol of formal lightness, a graceful suspension between distant design worlds.

Frog’s slender silhouette blends memory with innovation. Its minimalist, sturdy steel frame supports a light weave of natural or technical fibers that looks almost suspended. It’s a declaration of intent: to bring the tradition of hand-weaving into both indoor and outdoor spaces, without compromising the clean lines of industrial design. Frog’s many variations –classic woven, “padded,” refined leather, and colorful interpretations or even a laid-back chaise longue – reflect its chameleon-like ability to adapt to a wide range of environments, from a sun-drenched Mediterranean terrace to a sleek urban interior. There’s hardly a space Frog cannot inhabit. Its strength lies in its ability to transcend stylistic boundaries without ever losing its identity.

As Carola Bestetti, CEO of Living Divani and second-generation member of the founding family, explains, Frog’s secret lies in its quiet presence. “It’s a chair that never takes over a space, but it accompanies it. It’s humble, never imposing – yet impossible to overlook,” she explains. Bestetti recalls how this chair’s design heritage became one of the foundational pillars of Living Divani’s aesthetic language. Frog perfectly embodies the brand’s essence of refined understatement, which they strive for in every project. And today, as design increasingly turns toward questions of sustainability, durability, and long-term reliability, Frog offers a quiet but compelling answer, serving as a concrete example of these values. Its weave, echoing ancient craftsmanship, seamlessly coexists with a frame that speaks the language of modern industry. It’s a chair that unites worlds – just as Living Divani often does – bringing them together in a harmonious, essential and skilled way.

The eternal summer of design

There’s something about Frog that evokes summer. The relaxed, open, unhurried posture evokes the languor of sunlit afternoons, the ease of suspended time, the pleasure of long conversations. Yet, despite this “seasonal” quality, Frog is not tied to any specific time or place. On the contrary, like all true classics, it offers a universal design language that can effortlessly be placed in both minimalist settings and more “opulent” environments. It’s no surprise that Frog has become a cornerstone of the Living Divani catalog, helping shape a design vocabulary built on subtraction, precision, attention to detail, and the tactile allure of materials. Frog doesn’t age because it was never about trends, but about vision.

At a time when design is called upon to reflect new sensibilities – ecological, sensory, and narrative – Frog stands as a clear example of how lightness can represent both an ethical and cultural stance. More than an aesthetic quality, it becomes a way of relating to space and to people. Under the artistic direction of Piero Lissoni and the thoughtful leadership of Carola Bestetti, Living Divani has cultivated a brand that speaks to the intelligent sensitivity of its audience, without ever compromising on style. And Frog, with its discreet yet unmistakable silhouette, perfectly embodies this approach: a design that doesn’t seek effect but effectiveness. It doesn’t impose; it proposes. And above all, it endures. Because in design, time isn’t only about durability. It’s about consistency. And with its timeless grace, Frog is destined to live on in our collective imagination for years to come.

A new era: Super Frog

In 2025, thirty years after its original debut, Frog evolves, becoming Super Frog; and it celebrates this anniversary with a bold new look that enhances its distinctive character. Once again designed by Piero Lissoni, Super Frog preserves the soul of the original project while amplifying its stage presence and personality. The structure is more substantial, thanks to the use of aluminum and thicker elements, while the spirit remains true to the refined balance of lightness, strength, and personality.

Available in both armchair and lounge versions, Super Frog introduces two new design variations for the seat and backrest: one features horizontal groves that emphasize its rhythmic texture, the other presents a perforated pattern that creates a striking optical effect. “Thirty years later, Frog becomes ‘Super’ because it’s grown a little; it’s now stronger. It’s become a beautiful thirty-year-old,” Lissoni says with his signature mix of irony and affection. More than a tribute to an iconic piece, Super Frog is a statement: a demonstration of design’s power to evolve without losing its essence, always finding new ways to make its voice heard across time.
