Kounellis, Boetti, Pistoletto: a hidden art storage in Milan opens to the public for a limited time

On the outskirts of Milan, the storage spaces of the Christian Stein Gallery — home to works by Boetti, Kounellis, Paladino and Pistoletto — open to the public for a limited time, becoming a temporary exhibition space between archive and display.

Over the next few weeks, between design week, art week and miart, Milan is transformed: gates, doors and thresholds that throughout the rest of the year remain closed open on an extraordinary basis, letting visitors and the curious into spaces that are hard to imagine without having seen them. And it is in these unexpected contexts that some of the most interesting experiences take shape.

This is the case of the warehouses of the Christian Stein Gallery, in the town of Pero northwest of Milan, which will be open on an exceptional basis every Friday and Saturday from April 10 to June 6. This place is not a simple storage of works, but a real extension of the exhibition spaces of the Corso Monforte venue, a dynamic archive where works are not only kept, but put in relation with each other and with the space that hosts them. A vocation that has already emerged during previous extraordinary openings, in 2014 and 2019, when the warehouses had hosted a series of anthological exhibitions, revealing to the public a dimension of the gallery that is normally invisible.

The Pero warehouse occupies a building that used to be an industrial space in the past, in that area of Milan where there were buildings related precisely to manufacturing activities. Its original mission is revealed by some archetypal elements: the large continuous rooms and the glass windows that flood the space with natural light. Anticipating the construction, a paved outdoor area is now a courtyard.

This place is not a simple storage of works, but a true extension of the exhibition spaces of the Corso Monforte venue, a dynamic archive where works are not only kept, but related to each other and to the space that houses them.

Parallel, the exhibition "Vertex" has already opened and will be open until May in the Corso Monforte space to celebrate the gallery's 60th anniversary. The second solo show by Jason Martin (Jersey, 1970), it features six large oil paintings on aluminum and two mixed media works on aluminum and velvet, all made especially for the occasion.
