Foster + Partners to renovate the Midtown Bus Terminal in Manhattan

The project will revolve around a large atrium and will combine bus and subway services, making one of the busiest stations in the world more efficient.

Foster + Partners, in collaboration with the Chicago-based engineering company A Epstein and Sons International Inc., has presented the renovation project for the Midtown Bus Terminal in Manhattan, which will combine bus and subway services into a single building. Currently, according to data collected by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, it is the busiest station in the world in terms of traffic volume. The station, located on Eighth Avenue in Midtown Manhattan, was built in the 1950s, and over time underwent a series of renovations, but eventually fell into a state of disrepair.

Foster + Partners’ project will include 2.1 million square feet dedicated to transportation and commercial spaces and will revolve around a large multilevel atrium. The studio has paid particular attention to making this space accessible and passenger-focused, focusing on intuitive orientation and permeable public spaces. Additionally, the project is designed to have net-zero emissions and includes the addition of green spaces outside to improve the well-being of the entire area.
