5 usually inaccessible Milanese locations open to visitors this weekend

On Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 May, Open House Milan unlocks the doors of some of the most special places in the city.

This year Open House Milano – at its eighth edition – offers once again the opportunity to discover unique places of the city usually inaccessible, putting in the spotlight the virtuous practices promoted by a renewed design sensitivity, between architecture, interior design and urban space. Here is the selection.

Former railway yard Farini
Built in 1905, the former railway yard Farini is a break along the urban axis north-west between the districts of Via Cenisio-Mac Mahon and Isola and is located in a quadrant that in recent times has undergone major changes and that goes from Porta Nuova, passing through the Garibaldi Station, to the Bovisa district and the former Expo area. Localization, accessibility and dimensions make it the main one of the seven former railway yards, now protagonists of the regeneration process previewed from the “Agreement of Program” undersigned in 2017 from Municipality of Milan and Gruppo FS Italiane. In 2018, OMA team together with Laboratorio Permanente won the international design competition held for the area with the masterplan project “Agenti Climatici” (Climate Agents).

MusAB - Brera Astronomical Museum
The MusAB, Brera Astronomical Museum, unveils its jewel: the Schiaparelli Dome, designed in 1764 by Ruggero Boscovich and undisputed protagonist of the first studies of Mars. The museum and dome are located on the second and seventh floors of Palazzo Brera (without elevator).

One works HQ
One Works headquarters in Milan aims to give shape to a new type of space for the project, in balance between the traditional idea of the architecture studio and the contemporary approach to hybridization, of both composition languages and different functions. The intervention of 2018 is the result of the recovery and conversion of an industrial building of 1600 square meters of the early twentieth century, originally used as workshop and garage. The new layout amplifies the spatiality and the original characters of the place, giving life through a series of distinctive interventions to a sequence of evocative and efficient spaces adapted to the new needs of contemporary work.

LOM Afterwork - Urban Regeneration and Eco Gardens
LOM, a farmhouse built in 1820, was restored by Andrea Borri Architetti. The future of craftsmanship and productivity meet here with respect for people and the environment.

Open 336

The new office building of Park Associati in Viale Sarca is a current version of the architectural archetypes of the surrounding context, in continuity with the development of the Bicocca district, from which the building absorbs the range of colors. The design of the facade summarizes and reinterprets the morphological elements of the surrounding buildings. The offices, mostly open-space, become large spaces for sharing, which through balconies and large openings to the outside offer a telescopic view.

Among the places of historical interest – iconic, well-known and less known – there are then the Sormani Library, the House of Petrarca, the Monte Amiata Complex, the Water Station of Milan, the Ex Cinema Maestoso, the Galleria del Vento Edificio B19, the Pirellone, Garage Italia Milano, Carbonari penthouse by Cacciadominioni; Rustici House, in Corso Sempione by Giuseppe Terragni and Pietro Lingeri, The Church of San Giovanni Bono and the district of Arrighetti, the Workshops spaces of La Scala theater, Palazzo INA by Piero Bottoni, Gerolamo Theater, and the Rainbow Tower.
