Kevin Daly Architects (KDA) and Productora, in collaboration with TLS Landscape Architecture, are the winners of the international competition organized by Malcolm Reading Consultants (MRC) to design new Houston Endowment Headquarters. The philantropic foundation based in Texas, working to support under-resourced communities in the Houston area, will be provided of new work spaces, closer to the community and its needs. The building, expected to open in 2022, is connected both to the landscape and history of Spotts Park and aims to be “as welcoming as the shadow beneath a tree”, as Kevin Daly Architects describes it. The proposal, in fact, includes a grid roof canopy, a colonnade and a patio that provide shading spaces below. Interiors comprehend public and private areas connected to the park through a series of terraces. “We wanted to focus on fundamental building elements: the loggia, veranda, the canopy and the screen”, Kevin Daly explains, “These work together in a climate like Houston’s to create openness and accessibility while balancing the effects of the environment”. The competition was launched in June 2019 and received submissions from 121 teams.
