Thanks 2021, welcome 2022

Editorial director Walter Mariotti’s leading article symbolically closes Domus’ 2021, a good year despite the difficulties of the pandemic, and a springboard into the next one.

At the end of a complicated second year, I feel only gratitude and happiness.

Among the many reasons, personal and professional, is the privilege of belonging to a community that for almost a century has never ceased to amaze by pursuing an eccentric vision with respect to the spirit of the time. A horizon inspired by the critical spirit, beauty, sustainability, inclusion. Long before they became the watchwords of our time.

Editoriale Domus is a reality that, based on the trust of a far-sighted and generous property, President Giovannna Mazzocchi and CEO Sofia Bordone, continues to demonstrate that in life it is not the roles that count but the vision. Not what one is, but what one does. With tenacity, in silence, day after day, this year too Domus has demonstrated all its value, its resilience, its creative and generative capacity. Results that make me feel proud to be part of it. And to serve it.

This year all of Domus’ objectives – cultural, editorial, strategic and even economic – have been achieved. The magazine marks one of its best seasons thanks also to the synthesis of thought, aesthetics and nature proposed by the Japanese master Tadao Ando. And he prepares for the pyrotechnic imagination of Jean Nouvel, who after Michele De Lucchi, Winy Maas, David Chipperfield and precisely Tadao Ando will be the fifth Guest Editor of the 10x10x10 series, which in the next five years will reserve other twists. Demonstrating the attractiveness of Domus which in an increasingly fluid context renews its global leadership.

Our site also continues its growth, both in terms of audiences and conception, cultural and organizational. Showing that architecture and design are increasingly the conceptual matrices of our time, common to different and often unexpected disciplines and fields. And that the close relationship between journalism and digital engineering and marketing is not a limit but the only possibility. To keep high the numbers but above all the concepts, the evocations the quality of journalistic standards.

If it goes without saying that publishing is going through a critical phase, I would like to repeat that the Domus experience is the best demonstration that ideas, criticism and courage are in excellent health. The confirmation is the success of two new magazines – DomusAir, dedicated to global infrastructures, and BrerAZ, which reaffirms the “Milano Model”, which before being entrepreneurial is cultural. Projects that demonstrate how partnerships with companies that are different but aligned in their values and cultural vision, such as One Works and Equita, are the key to new virtuous processes.

Domus thus greets the year that is leaving with two new international partnerships. Domus Georgia, which broadens the spectrum of traditional licenses towards the last frontier, which leads from Tbilisi to Mumbai, and Domus Iran, which thanks to the wishes of Ambassador Giuseppe Perrone and the first secretary David Balloni, demonstrate how culture manages to unite as much as politics risks distancing.

With the success of the fourth edition of Domusforum, the think-thank designed to elaborate a possible future for cities, and the strategic consultancy with the City of Taranto, primarily wanted by the Mayor Rinaldo Melucci and the councilor Ubaldo Occhinegro, Domus demonstrated at the Venice Biennale that today the real lack is not a metaverse but a metaplace, where data and needs find solutions in connections capable of illuminating the enigmas of associated life. Just like Domusdinner, the new soft power concept launched in November in Milan that we will repeat in other cities.

Walter Mariotti, editorial director of Domus

To make us a gift under the tree, we put The growing city, the first critical essay on the new Bocconi Campus in Milan, created by the SANAA studio, which represents a milestone in the development of the idea of the city, of education and of a postmodern community.

The reason is simple. As in 1928, also in 2022 Domus wants to leave Milan to look at the world. And bring the world to Milan, which after two years of pandemic has never been so beautiful. Have a good year,
