Discovering the Satellite

The show at the Fabbrica del Vapore is an overview of two decades of experimentation by the pavilion that is traditionally the most innovative of the whole Furniture Fair. #MDW2017

One of the most interesting events of the 2017 Fuorisalone is the exhibition “SaloneSatellite: 20 Years of New Creativity” on show at the Fabbrica del Vapore. Beppe Finessi was the curator; Ricardo Bello Dias designed the display; Leonardo Sonnoli was in charge of graphics. “New Creativity” is a selection of over 500 projects by as many young designers, ones who sought dialogue with and attention from manufacturers and design journalists at the SaloneSatellite over the past two decades.

The exposition is divided into three design approaches, each in its own nave of the formerly industrial building nicknamed “the Cathedral”. One group of designers is featured for having privileged typological innovation, the recasting of traditional forms and the reinvention of objects by surpassing their acquired images. Another group concentrated their ideas and actions on experimentation with construction, taking an insightful approach to materials and different ways to use them and their related technological aspects. A third group of designers focused on form-related innovation, a search for sculptural or decorative aspects.

The exhibition is a definite reminder of how profoundly design has changed in the past 20 years, and how the young participants in the SaloneSatellite have succeeded in registering the upheavals in design culture, adjusting the way they presented and communicated their work.
