In the courtyard of Palazzo Isimbardi, the capital of Catalonia is displaying its creative potential with an exhibition curated by Emiliana Design Studio. #MDW2017

“In & Out” is the subtitle of the Barcelona Centro de Diseño exhibition on at Palazzo Isimbardi. Chosen by the curators of Emiliana Design Studio, Ana Mir and Emili Padrós (both 1969), the subtitle aims to describe how the citizens of Barcelona like to live outdoors.

The permeability of the line dividing the intimacy of the domestic interior and the conviviality of public space is rendered physically by the exhibition’s structure. Under the portico of the court, furniture and object conceived for indoors are on display, while elements of outdoor furniture is shown in the central part of the open-air court. Spatial partitioning is given by Persian blinds, the traditional kind of shutters typically used in Barcelona, here in a recent revisitation made by the company Persiane Barcelona.

The display has the merit of juxtaposing work by internationally famous designers such as Patricia Urquiola and Konstantin Grcic (here because the former has designed for Kettal and the latter for BD Barcelona) with projects by mature and eclectic personalities such as Martín Azúa, whose ceramics studies are distinguished by a focus on the language of the material and the rediscovery of artisanal craft techniques.
