The Under Bar Himmel exhibition presents twelve chairs made of ø 4,5 and 8 mm electrogalvanized steel rods, designed by Furniture Design master students from Aalto University’s School of Arts, Design and Architecture. The prototypes were made by the students with the help of the University’s metal workshop masters, and were coated at the Piiroinen Oy factory in Salo. As the chairs are galvanized they can be used outside as well – under bar himmel.

Martin Relander, Lecturer at Aalto University said: “the purpose of the exercise was to create light, but strong furniture using the space frame structure made of slightly under-dimensioned steel sections. The limited number of materials and uniform finish was chosen in order to make the power and possibility of theme and variation as clear as possible, and to assure that in the end each student found a personal way of expressing his or her talent.”

Himmeli in Finnish or himmel in Swedish, is a traditional Scandinavian decoration. It is composed of Platonic polygons symbolizing abundance and fertility and are hung from the ceiling, representing the limitless dimensions of the sky and promising a good harvest for the coming year.
