During the Goodwood Festival of Speed in Chichester, Gerry Judah presented an installation for BMW that challenges physics with a 100 metres long and 40 metres high steel sculpture.

Gerry Judah was asked to create a large scale sculpture to commemorate BMW’s centenary at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in Chichester, West Sussex. The sculpture stood only for five days and then was taken down, the steel was recycled and the cars returned to their museums.

Judah commemorated BMW’s centenary through their motorsport achievements: 100 metres long and 40 metres high, the sculpture featured the original working vehicles – not models – BMW 328 Mille Miglia Roadster, Brabham-BMW BT52 F1 car and the 1999 Le Mans-winning BMW V12 LMR. The structure was assembled with 816 square metres of laser-cut steel plate, an area three times the size of a tennis court. With enormous cantilevers supporting the three historic cars, the sculpture sat on a base only 70 cm wide, and a weight of 77 tonnes.
