A refined equilibrium

New upholstery-fabric and reissues of furnishing by Rafael Moneo are some of the new items that Hermès present in a scenographic installation by Mauricio Rocha. #MDW2016

The house as a refuge, a place of wellbeing and harmony, is the idea behind a large installation of earthen bricks designed by Mexican architect Mauricio Rocha for Hermès that presents the latest new lines in their home collection.

Alongside the new pieces – such as the Sellier sofa by Noé Duchaufour-Lawrance – are featured elegant re-issues of the Oria d’Hermès chair and a table conceived by Rafael Moneo in the 1960s for his own home, inspired by the furniture of Alvar Aalto and tubular metal furniture of Bauhaus.

The collection of objects Équilibre d’Hermès meanwhile uses refined materials and finishes – Taurillon H, wicker and brass – to create a series of elegant and ironic objects that act as an invitation to appreciate the minimal gestures of everyday. These include a magnifying glass in precarious equilibrium on a conical support, a paperweight with a icosahedron shape (achieved using a method developed by the Maison in the 1920s), a magazine holder with a saddle shape and a lectern in leather that seems tailor-made for resting a book on.
Finally Irish architect and illustrator Nigel Peake has created a series of delicate watercolours that feature on wallpaper, upholstery-fabric and three decorative panels, A Walk in the City
