Domestic cast-iron

Inspired by the cast-iron production process, a collection of tables designed by Grcic for Magis is a great way to celebrate the company’s 40th anniversary. #MDW2016

An extremely well organised and intuitive stand celebrating 40 tireless years of production clearly conveys the essence of Magis this year.

Lined up on a stand like those found at playing fields are the designs that have forged the company’s history and philosophy, plus two new products in their own well-defined space: Jerszy Seymour’s playful collection of seats and tables and a Konstantin Grcic table collection.

Brut is further confirmation that the German designer is having a particularly successful design year and he has brought many fine works to Design Week. Formed of a large rectangular table, a height-adjustable trestle table, two round tables, a bistro table and two benches, the collection combines attention to detail with a strong but balanced image. The inspiration behind the design was the cast-iron production process and Brut is reminiscent of its industrial application, transferring to furniture the grammar of this material: solidity and no compromise.

“It is one of the oldest processing methods for ferrous metals.” explains Grcic. “The production process has an almost archaic physicality and consistency. Iron foundries are heavy industry and although cast iron has been used primarily for decoration – see the garden furniture of the Victorian age – it is a material with two peculiarities: it is heavy and robust.

Cast iron reacts well when compressed which is why it serves as a structural material in bridge construction and, on a scale closer to that of furnishings, as a base for heavy machinery.

The name Brut means coarse and untreated but it also conjures up the sweetness of sparkling wine. The name conveys refinement and sophistication which are also features of this design.”
