Design Parade 7

Young designers Julie Richoz and Marc Sarrazin have been announced as the winners of the French design festival's seventh edition.

The winners of the 7th International Design Parade Festival have been announced this past weekend in Villa Noailles, France. The Grand Prize was awarded to French-Swiss designer Julie Richoz and the audience-decided Public Prize was awarded to French designer Marc Sarrazin. Their works will be on display until 30 September alongside the projects of another eight finalists.

Grand Prize winner Julie Richoz appropriates the essence of systems and materials which fascinate her, in order to create objects which exhibit a playful simplicity. The series Arrotolare collects everything that rests upon the desk into a single "movement". The different items within the set embrace one another, creating an ensemble. Each design exhibits a simple construction, based upon a sheet of metal that is cut out, bent, and then sealed with a plastic stopper.

The series Bouleau takes its inspiration from a round industrial metal clamp. Beyond its practical uses, the cut-out design of the clamp, translated to wood, fashions the aesthetic of the series.

Public Prize winner Marc Sarrazin envisions design as a practice which is not limited to the conception of shapes, but which also addresses our relationship to objects. For him, the term "functional" no longer only signifies "adapted to a purpose". Instead, it may also be understood and applied to an order, or a wider system, which integrates language and knowledge. Basing his work upon the development of the cognitive sciences, the advent of new technologies, and putting great emphasis on the irrational, he is looking for ways to penetrate our everyday lives in unexpected ways.
