Reading frenzy: publishing house for young readers
Founded by Francine Bouchet in Geneva in 1987, the
publisher La Joie de Lire
produces books aimed at children and young adults.
Among its key publications –
creations by Swiss and international authors and
illustrators – La Joie de Lire
counts heroes such as Haydé’s “Milton” and Albertine’s
“Marta la vache” (Marta the
cow) as well as albums or story books by the famous
German illustrator Wolf
Erlbruch.
The exhibition "Délires de lire (reading frenzy)" at Mudac
Lausanne (until 31 January) presents
fictitious characters from
these albums, giving them a tangible reality that will
charm visitors big and small.
The public walks through a kind of forest made up of
diverse objects, trees,
machines, cars, household appliances, all drawn from
publications and forming the
universe of the characters, Milton and Marta of course, but
also a knitting
grandmother, penguins, a girl reading and a whale. In this
world that has emerged
from pages of fiction one dreams, one marvels, one
rediscovers one’s favourite
heroes or makes their acquaintance by consulting the
books placed at the disposal
of visitors.
Created at the Musée des Beaux-
Arts, La Chaux-de-Fonds, in the summer of 2008, the
exhibition based on the publisher La Joie de Lire is being
reinvented this autumn at the
mudac. The contemporary artist Christian Gonzenbach was
given carte blanche and has
proposed an amazing installation, La Grande Friche,
inspired by the albums and stories
issued by the publisher. In the space created by the artist,
the imaginary, make-believe
world of the characters from the books takes the physical
reality of the visitor into
account. This is a place in which reading, relaxation and
creation merge. Its realisation
was entrusted to Adrien Rumeau.
“A room strewn with characters, fragments of décor, bits
of texts. All these elements are
extracted from the albums by various authors published by
La Joie de Lire. There is no
scenario, nevertheless all the stories are there, it is for the
visitor to recompose them
according to his or her own point of view. This
presentation offers possible and
improbable combinations, revealing the infinite potential
contained within these books”,
Christian Gonzenbach explains.
