MVRDV return to the roots of architecture with Bulgari

The Dutch architecture practice have carried out research into materials for Bulgari, combing their modern vision with antique artisan jewellery techniques.

“With Serpenti room we have created a bridge between architecture and jewellery”, says Jacob Van Rijs co-founder di MVRDV, the architecture practice who have designed the installation for Bulgari at the 2018 Fuorisalone. The Dutch architects came up with an exploration of materials in the form of a snake, through a play of mirrors that eliminates the finiteness of space and infinitely repeats the geometry that it is made up of. “We worked together with the brand to study materials that take up antique jewellery techniques and that we use in architectural designs. What is interesting about working between architecture and jewellery with Bulgari is that it is very old”, dating back to 1884, “and this allowed us to go back to the roots of architecture”.

The co-founder goes on to say, “this installation in the shape of a serpent goes back to the origins of the brand but at the same time looks to the future as it is a study of new materials”. Jacob van Rijs concludes with, “architecture and fashion? We can work together because fashion is very fast, architecture is very slow and they draw inspiration from one another”.
