Roman-style pizza and aperitivo cocktails are served by chef Renee Erickson in this American restaurant devoted to Italian tradition. Located on the ground floor of The Spheres, the centerpiece of Amazon’s Seattle campus with workspaces and greenhouses enclosed in glass domes, Willmott’s Ghost – a tribute to Victorian horticulturist Ellen Ann Willmott – is inspired by the surrounding geometry and the bright, airy environments of modern art galleries. Heliotrope Architects opted for marble, tiles and brass that create curved surfaces, rounded walls and radial shelves to reflect the modern host structure. The varnished-wood slatted walls recall the knurling on the sides of the coins, while the bar shelves, the pendant lamps and the bathroom elements are made of solid brass. Italy is still honored by the softer pastel hues of the white marble and the pink Moroccan – a custom color from Ann Sacks – and mint green tiles. The curved nature of the building, together with the sophisticated mechanical systems that support the three-story indoor jungle within The Spheres, was the most difficult design challenge. With the custom banquets, tables, chairs and brass fixtures, the design team was able to perfectly adapt to the one-of-a-kind dimensions of the space.
