WantedDesign Manhattan gets splashed with Polish colour and witty design this week as the Adam Mickiewicz Institute presents an exhibition and pop-up shop featuring Poland’s most invigorating young designers working today. “#PLDSGN: Up-and-Coming Designers from Poland” offers a look into the ceramics, graphic designs, toys and accessories that are causing lovers of unique pieces to cast their eye to the central European country.
The exhibition design, by Dorota Kabala, has been curated with a theme linked to sustainable manufacturing and a reduction in environmental impact, showing the forward-thinking trajectory of Polish design. UAU Project’s 3D-printed accessories, for example, highlight the use of biodegradable and recyclable material, while bro.Kat’s jewellery pieces make use of coal in innovative ways.
Other works include illustrator Aleksandra Morawiak’s collage-and-photography prints, revealing her interest in psychology, literature and cinematography, and ceramic cups, sugar bowls and vases by fellow illustrator and designer Magdalena Pilaczynska – part of her Look at Me Plates collection.
The Guide to Polish Design will be launched during this time, a book celebrating 100 years of the country’s creative spirit. It will be sold alongside other reading material published by the Adam Mickiewicz Institute that promote Polish culture – from art and design to experimental electronic music.
After WantedDesign (18-21 May), the work will be on show and available for purchase at the WantedDesign IC Store in Brooklyn from 23 May to 13 June.
