Kiki Smith’s domestic tales

Amidst the sumptuous surroundings of the antique palace of Querini Stampalia, home two centuries ago to count Giovanni Querini and now transformed into a Foundation, Kiki Smith presents her latest project, curated by Chiara Bertola. According to the American artist, born however in Nuremberg in 1954, it is an account of “domestic occupation”, taking inspiration from the rich collection of portraits by Piero Longhi, Antonio Canova and Giovanni Bellini present in the eighteenth century dwelling. At the same time however, the narration assumes agonising tones.

Amongst paintings, furniture and mirrors, characteristic of the noble Venetian home, the American sculptress unravels her own seemingly disorganised story, that speaks more than anything of a nostalgia for domestic life, made up of stories of precarious life and unlawful occupants. E.S.
